Dundead: Angel's Egg (4K Restoration)
Perhaps one of the most distinctive animated films ever made, and unavailable for years, Angel’s Egg is a beautiful, dreamlike fable which refuses to hold its audience’s hands and eschews traditional narrative logic. Enigmatic and mysterious, it is a film which invites speculation and interpretation, while also refusing straight-forward translation. The result is surreal and bewitching.
In a desolate city, a young girl takes care of a large egg she holds carefully in her arms. A boy with a gun arrives in search of a bird he saw in his dream. A curious bond strikes up between the two drifting souls.
The film is a creative collaboration between acclaimed director Mamoru Oshii (best-known for directing the 1995 Ghost in the Shell anime) and revered artist Yoshitaka Amano (known for his intricate concept art for the Final Fantasy videogame series). The film beautifully intertwines Oshii’s thematic reflections on philosophy and theology with Amano’s distinctive ink painting style, culminating in an arrestingly beautiful hand-drawn allegorical fantasy.
Forty years after the film’s original release, this is a stunning all-new 4K restoration of the film, supervised by Oshii, and in UK cinemas for the very first time.
