The Secret Floor – Schools Screening
Discovery Film Festival school booking enquiries open on Mon 24 August.
Karli, a 12-year-old boy, moves to the Alps, where his parents are making their dream of running a hotel come true. But instead of a holiday, Karli grudgingly helps his parents scrape old wallpaper. Suddenly, he discovers an old lift– that takes him back in time to the year 1938! There, he befriends the spirited Jewish girl Hannah and the shoeshine boy Georg. Together, they solve an exciting mystery case. But as Karli grows closer to his new friends, he begins to sense the dark shadow looming over their world and is soon confronted with the reality of National Socialism.
Filmed in stunning Alpine locations, The Secret Floor is a time-travel adventure, offering a fresh perspective on a crucial historical period, while also keeping it light-hearted. Turning a difficult but important theme into a creative and imaginative film, we dive into a foreign world along with Karli, uncovering its secrets. The film tackles a relevant topic without ever leaving the child’s perspective, making it accessible and comprehensible for young audiences.

Advisory
The film contains some mild swearing. While the film isn’t graphic, it portrays the National Socialist era, where prejudiced attitudes, antisemitic rhetoric, and the persecution of Jews were the norm. The film is made for a young audience and balances the educational, emotional weight with a mystery-adventure storyline. It aims to encourage discussion about history, tolerance, and empathy.
