Having recently celebrated the 20th edition of Discovery Film Festival, we welcome the return of Discovery Family Film Club with another selection of some of our favourite family films from over the past few years.
In a remote community in Western Australia, 11 year-old Dylan is coming to terms with the recent death of his mother, and has to look after himself whilst his father (Sam Worthington) is overcome with grief. At school one day, he’s introduced to the art of creating paper planes and surprises everyone with his first record-breaking attempt. Taking part in the national finals, he qualifies for the World Paper Plane Championships in Tokyo. Trying to raise the funds necessary for this once-in-a-lifetime experience, Dylan is helped by his school friends, the neighbours and his charmingly unconventional grandfather. But will Dylan’s success help him rebuild his relationship with his father, and can his small-to creations really lift a world title?
Our Discovery Film Festival opening film back in 2015, this film introduced us for the first time to young actor Julian Dennison. Scene stealing in this film as Dylan’s best friend Kevin, Julian has since gone on to star in Taika Waititi’s hugely successful Hunt For The Wilderpeople and appear in Godzilla vs Kong and Deadpool 2. But it was his role as wise-cracking Kevin in this film that first brought him to the attention of Discovery audiences!
