An Unfinished Film
This screening will be introduced by Dr Julian Ward, honorary fellow in Chinese Studies at University of Edinburgh.
January 2020. A film crew reunites near Wuhan to resume the shooting of a film halted ten years earlier, only to share the unexpected challenges as cities are placed under lockdown.
"An Unfinished Film (一部未完成的电影) is a fictional archive, a subverted film that represents Lou's own way of documenting the outbreak of the pandemic. Now, five years since the pandemic broke out, as relevant memories may have faded away, we wish to encourage a memory exchange of the pandemic among everyone by releasing this latest work of Lou Ye in the UK. We believe this film resonates with the memories of people from different walks of life, no matter when or where the memories were collected. And this resonance may relate to pains, sufferings, loss, and even anxieties, and, at times, you may find yourself laughing through tears.” MINT Chinese Film Festival
Drawing on outtakes from his previous work, lockdown phone footage, zoom calls and CCTV, acclaimed director Lou Ye has created a film which is by turns contemplative, tense and moving.

★★★★★ An utterly unique and very important movie about Covid, the crisis that affected all of us.
