Shogun to The Crown: Costume design with Carlos Rosario and Jane Petrie

Duration: 1h15m
Dates: Thu 14 Nov 2024 18:30 - 19:45
Location: Cinema 1

Sit in on an exclusive conversation between award-winning costume designers as they share the trials and tales of textiles for screen.

In collaboration with V&A Dundee, join two of Hollywood’s most in-demand costume designers to discover how rich and detailed wardrobes on screen can transport us to a time and place and help bring characters to life.

From the influence of trade on material and colour, to the precise pleat quantities that signify rank, Carlos Rosario and his team’s deep dive into kimono from feudal Japan has earned widespread acclaim for FX / Disney+’s Shōgun and broke records at the 2024 Emmy awards.

Also joining the stage is Dundee’s own Jane Petrie, the multi-award-winning costume designer behind the films Moon (2009) and ’71 (2014), and TV productions such as The Crown (2016-23) and Black Mirror (2011-16). Together the designers will discuss their journeys, their work and the hidden details that sell the story on screen. Their discussion will be followed by time for audience questions.

This event is in collaboration with V&A Dundee, to celebrate their Kimono: Kyoto to Catwalk  exhibition, which runs until Sun 5 January.
