Un Chien Andalou (35mm) + L' Age d'Or

Duration: 1h19m + 15m introduction
Dates: Sat 21 Sep 2024 18:00

To celebrate the centenary of the Surrealist Manifesto, we’ve put together a diverse programme of films reflecting the influence of surrealism across many decades of cinema history.

This event is part of our Surrealism on Film season and will be introduced by Brittany Jones from University of St Andrews.

Un Chien Andalou (Andalusian Dog) has become one of the most notorious films in cinema history. Now regarded as a surrealist masterpiece, its makers, Luis Buñuel and Salvador Dalí, set out - in Dalí’s words - to conceive a film which 'would plunge right into the heart of witty, elegant and intellectualised Paris with all the weight of an Iberian dagger'. After Un Chien Andalou, Buñuel was commissioned to make another film which would end up being L’Âge d’or (The Golden Age). Another surrealist and provocative film, it tells the story of two lovers who, despite their inability to marry, find themselves pushed and pulled together.

Screening L'Age d'Or was banned in December 1930 by the Paris Prefect of Police. Despite being defended by the Surrealists, notably by the famous author André Breton, who wrote the Surrealist Manifesto in 1928, it would remain censored for 51 years until 1981, when its original negative was restored by the Pompidou Center.

See both films back to back on the big screen, with Un Chien Andalou being projected from an old 35mm print and L’Âge d’or from a 4K restoration.
