A famous Italian film director recalls his childhood, his romances, and his friendship with an aging projectionist, set around the titular Cinema Paradiso in post-war Sicily.
Winner of the 1989 Cannes Grand Prix and the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1990, Giuseppe Tornatore’s comedy-drama is recognised as one of cinema’s most romantic odes to film. It’s also fondly remembered for its central relationship between young, lovable, film-obsessed Toto (Salvatore Cascio) and his friend and mentor, projectionist Alfredo (Phillipe Noiret).
With a swooning score from the legendary Ennio Morricone and featuring an in-depth depiction of the inner workings of an old-school projection booth, Cinema Paradiso is undoubtedly one of the ultimate works to see on 35mm. We’re proud to be presenting it this way, courtesy of a print from the Cinema Museum, London.
Cinema Paradiso will screen alongside short film In Motion. Director Ross Woodhead depicts the minutiae of analogue film from the projection booths of the Glasgow Film Theatre. Shot in close-ups, and featuring an atmospheric score and dreamlike crossfading, In Motion provides a unique perspective and audiovisual meditation on both the format and the medium of film.
