Crafting new skills with Options in Life

Lampshade making, colourful portraits, lego printing and more

We've been crafting up a storm with Options in Life's Employability Group. This group of ten adults with learning disabilities and additional support needs have been visiting DCA to explore different types of craft making and their enthusiasm is easy to see.

In 2025, the group completed a Christmas crafting project with us, where they made felt stockings, crafted wreaths from drinking straws, fashioned decorations from recycled paper and created their own crackers. They also got to try working with leather, making their own hand-made key fobs to give as gifts.

The crafting continued into the new year, with the group making their own monotype printed self-portraits, having a go at Lego printing, creating lampshades, folding and filling personal origami-style sketchbooks and experimenting with colourful, patterned portraits. They were prolific in their making and learned so many new skills. Take a look at some of what they created below.

We're already looking forward to welcoming them back for more creative making after Easter.

Feedback

The group even got creative with their feedback, adding colourful drawings to their comment cards.

I had fun on this course learning all new ways to create...

I enjoyed everything...

Interesting about how everyday objects could turn out looking so beautiful.

I liked making snowflakes and stockings

A brilliant course! Well paced, perfect pitch for the group. Jude and Suzy were fabulous and got to know the guys quickly and made a very inclusive, nurturing environment where everyone's creativity thrived!
