Sexy Beast (25th Anniversary, 4K Restoration)

Jonathan Glazer's mould-breaking, stylish thriller starring Ray Winstone and Ben Kingsley returns to our screens for its 25th anniversary, restored in stunning 4K.

Ex-villain Gal Dove (Winstone) has served his time behind bars and is blissfully retired to a Spanish villa paradise with a wife he adores (Amanda Redman). The idyll is shattered by the arrival of his gangster nemesis Don Logan (an unforgettable Kingsley), intent on persuading Gal to return to his former life for one last big job. Desperate not to sacrifice his enchanted existence, Dove is drawn into a shocking and explosive battle of wills with Logan. 

From its iconic Stranglers-soundtracked poolside opening, it is clear that Glazer is firing on all cylinders. Winstone and Kingsley are giving career-best performances, and there’s also a role for the great Ian McShane.

This film may have (at least visually) inspired countless other sun-kissed Brits-abroad gangster flicks but this is a decidedly weirder and more ferocious beast. He's only made four features to date (Birth, Under the Skin and The Zone of Interest round out his career) and anyone familiar with Glazer’s work knows how utterly uncompromising it can be. And if you’ve never seen any of his films before, this is a great point to jump in.
