Lati, an aspiring young rapper of African descent, finds refuge in freestyle after the death of her father, facing the disapproval of her traditional Muslim mother. Secretly trained by Judy, a former rapper, Lati discovers her talent and struggles to stand out in a sexist environment. Family tension grows when her mother decides to exhume her father's body to receive a traditional burial in Mali. Lati is torn between pursuing her dream or pleasing her mother. After much hustle, she will find her own voice in rap, transforming her struggle into a personal revolution.

A heartfelt drama that pulsates to the rhythm of Barcelona’s underground culture, Beef is an inspiring story of women artists breaking down barriers in a male-dominated world. With a fresh central performance from real-life freestyle rapper Latifa Drame (La Tiniebla), the film captures with real authenticity the freestyle scene in Barcelona while also conveying the cultural and identity challenges young migrants experience. Beef is a powerful tale of resilience, ambition, and female friendship.

Advisory:

This is a film set in the freestyle battle scene; therefore, it contains strong language. As Lati, the protagonist, tries to make into the scene, she faces racist, sexist and fatphobic comments which she fights back against with intelligent rhymes rather than offensive language. The film offers an opportunity to discuss the often racist and misogynistic underground battle rap scene, as well as the expectations put on young women, especially if they are racialised. There are a couple of references to drugs, but no drug use is shown in the film.
