Mezzotint
Learn all about Mezzotint, a monochrome intaglio process.
Meaning ‘halftone’ in Italian, Mezzotint creates a small ‘hand rocked’ plate, which prints a famously rich black tone. Learn how to work from dark to light, ‘burnishing’ back areas of a Mezzotint copper plate to then print atmospheric images.
In this class you’ll learn how to make a small copper mezzotint plate by hand ‘rocking’, how to use the different tools and oil-based inks and how to ink up and print your mezzotint plate using an intaglio printing press. At the end of the class you will have created a number of prints to take home.
Really relaxed and enjoyable. Everything was calming and friendly.
The course was a great introduction to the art of mezzotint and has left me confident to carry on.
