Fans of the films of Aaron Moorhead and Justin Benson (Spring, The Endless) will find lots to enjoy in this high-concept, but pleasingly low-key American chiller from directors Gabriel Bienczycki and Richard Karpala.
Effortlessly blurring the boundaries between genres, Falling Stars melds sci-fi, occult horror and American indie dramas into one cohesive whole. The film packs a lot of mythology and world-building into its brisk 80 minutes, but the light touch and gradual unfurling of its mysteries is one of the key pleasures of the film.
To reveal the broad shape of the narrative would both undersell the film’s strangeness and rob those slow reveals of their power, but the film has earned comparisons to everything from American horror writer Shirley Jackson to the 2019 cult hit The Vast of Night and there are perhaps even hints of the Dark Souls videogames, not in style, but in the film’s drip-feed approach to the broader lore behind the story.
It is an ambitious, intriguing and unsettling debut feature from its director-duo.
