Just when you think the vampire comedy subgenre has been thoroughly explored by such perennial classics as Fright Night, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and What We Do in the Shadows, here comes writer-director Ariane Louis-Seize to bring flesh blood to the party and drive a stake straight through your heart.

Sasha (a brilliant, seemingly effortless performance from Sara Montpetit) doesn’t see eye to eye with her family. While they delight in their vampiric nature and relish sucking the blood of their victims, Sasha refuses to kill, sating her thirst with fridge-ready blood bags. Paul (Félix-Antoine Bénard) is a nervy, depressed teenager, who may be harbouring suicidal thoughts. When Sasha and Paul’s paths cross, both of their worlds will change forever.

Louis-Seize’s handle of her material is perfectly judged – the film (despite the flippant title) never seeks to trivialise depression or suicidal ideation, and instead offers a genuinely empathetic, heartwarming and utterly charming spin on the vampire myth. Much like the hypnotic gaze of Bela Lugosi, this film is just impossible to resist.

Humanist Vampire Seeking Consenting Suicidal Person will screen with the short film The Girl with the Haunted Vagina, in which sexually repressed Meghan desperately tries to reach climax but is thwarted at every turn by the ghost that haunts her vagina (no, really).
