Based on a short story by Clive Barker, 1992’s Candyman brought a certain gothic gravitas, as well as contemporary social commentary, to the slasher subgenre.
Cleverly playing on the proliferation of urban myths, the film establishes its rules early; say the name "Candyman" into a mirror five times, and the murderous spirit will appear.
A recent murder at the Cabrini Greens housing project in Chicago draws the attention of Helen Lyle (Virginia Madsen) a white university student who is researching urban legends. As she uncovers more about the Candyman legend, she will come to question her findings; is it just an urban legend or is there something more?
Candyman has proven a fertile film for discussion; while it deals with themes of race inequality and urban decay in America, director Bernard Rose was white, and the film arguably embraces a white saviour narrative. But there is lots to enjoy here, not least the now iconic performance of Tony Todd as the hook-handed Candyman himself.
