Animation still: a beautiful moonlit landscape of a city in the desert

Having recently celebrated the 20th edition of Discovery Film Festival, we welcome the return of Discovery Family Film Club with another selection of some of our favourite family films from over the past few years.

Once upon a time there were two children brought up by the same woman. Azur, the son of a nobleman and Asmar, the son of the nanny who tells them many enchanting stories. Their favorite is about the Djinn fairy waiting to be rescued by a heroic prince. One dark day fate cruelly separates them. Some years later Azur sets out to rescue the fairy only to be reunited with Asmar. And so, begins the Princes' Quest - a fantastic adventure across magical, mythical lands and seas. But if only one of the two youths can be successful in their quest, which of them will triumph?

The fourth animated feature film crafted by Michel Ocelot, this was presented as part of Discovery Film Festival as long ago as 2007. Ocelot’s films – all of which have been shown at one time another here at DCA – are known for bringing together outstanding computer animation techniques with bold, painterly designs, in this case inspired by North African architecture and decorative art. They provide the perfect backdrop to this fantastical original story, inspired by the folktales of the Arabian Nights. Gripping storytelling with stunning visuals, and suitable for all ages, this is a truly magical introduction to the work of one of France’s greatest filmmakers.

We love to present family films from all around the world, and believe the best way to experience these is always in the original language, with subtitles in English where necessary.

We generally find that children aged 8+ can enjoy subtitled stories – our films are chosen for their strong narratives expressed very clearly through visuals, but we do encourage accompanying adults to assist their group if required, and so would flag up to other audience members there may be some quiet discussions audible from time to time during these screenings.
