Dundead: Akira (4K Restoration)

Katsuhiro’s 1988 adaptation of his own mammoth 120-chapter manga epic is one of the most celebrated and iconic anime films ever made. One of the pivotal films that defined the entire cyberpunk aesthetic, it’s a wildly imaginative sci-fi saga that obliterated the boundaries of Japanese animation and has influenced so much culture since its release.

Set in the cyberpunk metropolis of Neo-Tokyo, the film follows Kaneda and Tetsuo, two friends and members of motorcycle gang The Capsules. During a night-time clash with a rival gang, Tetsuo is captured by personnel from an army research facility. Kaneda resolves to rescue his friend from his captors, but something seems to have awoken some mysterious powers within Testuo. 

From its iconic opening night-time motorcycle cruise (stunningly soundtracked by Shoji Yamashiro) to its wild, huge-scale finale, Akira is every bit the film its reputation suggests.
