Her Will Be Done (Scottish Premiere)
Part of Dundead Film Festival 2026. DCA Supporters, Members and 18-25 Members get early access to tickets and passes (log in to access) with the festival opening for general sale on Fri 27 March at 10:00.
Julia Kowalski’s third feature Her Will Be Done is a beautifully observed coming-of-age tale set in the French countryside. It also dovetails nicely with ideas explored in our retrospective strand, with particularly strong echoes of Julia Ducournau’s Raw.
Maria Wróbel gives a fiercely magnetic performance as Nawojka, a young Polish immigrant who lives on a farm with her father and boorish brothers, who expect her to cook and to clean. Misogyny is quickly established as the default mode at home and in their small, scattered community. Nawojka yearns to wrestle free of her oppressive life, and the sudden arrival of a cool, mysterious young woman appears to awaken something in Nawojka. Is it lust, love or something else? A mysterious malady seems to be killing local cattle, and there also elements of folk horror in the film’s supernatural elements.
It is worth noting that the film does also include a pivotal moment of sexual assault; it is disturbing, and the build-up and aftermath are explored, but it is our belief that this moment is not gratuitous or exploitative and is handled sensitively.
The general world of the film is grubbily tactile, its horrors playing out amongst misty, waterlogged fields, shabby, cluttered barns and churning mud. This realism gives the film’s violence an intensity and a feeling of immediacy. It is a film written in fire among the fields.
