Avalon Fast’s second feature Camp heralds the arrival of a bold new voice in genre filmmaking. Fast refers to their genre of filmmaking as “Girl Horror”, as their stories focus on the eerie horrors of growing up, specifically with female influence. There is a spectral sense of rhythm and quiet to this film, which plays a little like I Saw the TV Glow meets The Craft, with a deep emotional core.

College dropout Emily (Zola Grimmer) arrives at a summer camp to start work as a counsellor. Running from personal tragedies, she and her father hope the experience can help her begin to heal and take her mind off things. She is taken in by her fellow counsellors, and soon a fierce and powerful bond forms between the young women.

Avalon Fast is part of the same trailblazing scene as filmmakers like Alice Maio McKay (T-Blockers), Louise Weard (Castration Movie), and is also set to appear in Jane Schoenbrun’s upcoming Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma

This is a potent and dreamlike brew, where female friendship, grief and witchcraft burn brightly. The film has already garnered rave reviews from the few festivals it has played so far, including from Vera Drew, creator of The People’s Joker, who proudly declared it her “favourite film of the year” on Letterboxd.

One of the year’s great discoveries.
