Delve into the world of Japanese cinema with this exciting film programme

We’re delighted to announce the return of the Japan Foundation Touring Film Programme, bringing a diverse selection of Japanese films to cinema audiences in Dundee.

The title of this year’s programme is Knowing Me, Knowing You: The True Self in Japanese Cinema, inviting audiences to consider how identity is explored in cinematic narratives. From crime dramas to comedy and animation, the film selection brings something for everyone – and if you book three or more films in the season, each ticket will be discounted to the special price of just £8. Read on to find out more about what’s coming up.

We open the season with The Hotel of My Dream, a humorous, semi-autobiographical story inspired by a book by Asako Yuzuki, author of the best-selling novel Butter. This charming and comical exploration of the reality of becoming a novelist also offers an insight into Japanese culture in the 1980s.

Next up is dark psychological drama Teki Cometh, shot in stylish black-and-white and exploring the breakdown of a retired literature professor. Meanwhile, Blue Boy Trial sheds light on a forgotten trial in 1960s Tokyo with reshaped Japan’s understanding of LGBTQ+ issues

We continue with this year’s vintage selection, 1958’s Conflagration, directed by the influential filmmaker Ichikawa Kon, while 2022’s I Am What I Am is a liberating celebration of a woman who faces herself and chooses to live against Japan’s social norms.

Rounding off the programme is The Final Piece, an ambitious crime drama set In the world of shogi gambling and our final film The Last Blossom, a thoughtful and tender anime in which a former gangster reflects on the meaning of his life.
