Rip It Up
Explore the changing face of youth rebellion, culture and expression on screen.
This summer, we’re taking part in the British Film Institute’s UK-wide season, Rip it Up, which explores and celebrates the changing face of youth rebellion, culture and expression – from joy to heartbreak – on screen. There are 11 fantastic titles in the season, and you can see any 3 for £24 when you book them together.
With films offering a direct window into the staggering impact of youthful creativity on our society, Rip It Up invites audiences of all ages to reflect on their own lived experiences, identities, and distinct cultural interests as young people growing up against an evolving social fabric.
There's mod rebellion in Quadrophenia, hedonistic chaos in Trainspotting, love across cultural divides in East is East, a dive into 90s club culture in Human Traffic, powerful new urban drama Ish, and much more.
Over the past 75 years, the narrative has shifted from one of class-conscious post-war subcultures to a more fluid, digitally connected, and globally aware contemporary expression, but that generational desire for change and belonging has endured; and youth rebellion continues to play an important role in society; perhaps more important than ever.
