Why families love Family Art Lab
We take a look at the benefits families feel from creating art together
Our Family Art Labs offer time and space for families to create together. Each session is inspired by the work on show in our galleries and starts with a tour of the exhibition. Led by local artists, families are guided through different activities and given lots of different materials to have fun and create their own artwork with.
We've taken some time to look at the feedback for each of our Family Art Lab sessions to find out what people love about them, and we discovered some clear themes...

Family and community
Something that's key about these sessions is that they offer time together as a family, with everyone able to get involved. Activities are designed to be accessible and our artist tutors are always on hand to provide guidance and help. These sessions also allow children and parents to interact and meet new friends.
I got help making a collage with my granny.
Having my mum with me, having fun with her.
Such a lovely way to spend a morning with my boy.
What a lovely opportunity to explore and connect as a family.
Space to be creative
Each session starts with a visit to the galleries to get some inspiration, and then our artist tutors guide families through an activity or two which links with what they've seen in the exhibition. Wee ones love being able to create, with activities helping to develop their fine motor skills and encouraging them to express themselves. And we love seeing what everyone makes!
My daughter (3 yrs) really enjoyed the workshop. It was great to take her round the exhibition before getting stuck in with the arts + crafts.
Good to get a wee look at exhibition beforehand.
Thank you for the space & time to create something!
It was amazing because I was able to draw.
Trying something new
Each Family Art Lab includes different activities and gives opportunities to explore a variety of art materials, from clay and paint to printmaking and collage. Families enjoy trying new techniques and being able to make a mess.
The children could paint which is too messy at home.
Really innovative and engaging fun for little and big ones.
Hugely enjoyable and well-equipped workshop.
Granddaughter got the chance to experiment with a range of materials.
Helpful staff and artist expertise
Having the artist tutors on hand means that families are guided through each activity and have help there whenever they need it. The tutors are able to share their expertise and make each session welcoming and stress-free.
What a fabulous creative morning. Amy & Sharon were so supportive and helpful and created a relaxed and fun environment.
Great activity and great fun, with good intro/ set up and absorbing task. We all (2 x 70 year olds + 1 x 7 year old) had a great time.
Fantastic event! Kids loved the creative space & the great help and support provided by the staff.
Very welcoming, fun, creative activity in a safe environment.
As a freelance artist I enjoy the collaboration and exchanging ideas with other artists to design these sessions. Each workshop is different and with that comes some new challenges which keeps my career in the creative industry fresh. I am always given freedom and support by the DCA Learning team to experiment and innovate in new ways. I find it very rewarding seeing the positive workshop outcomes and the group feeling in the room.Sharon Phinn Artist Tutor
