Ciné Sunday: La Bola Negra
Inspired by an unfinished work by the great Spanish writer Federico García Lorca, La Bola Negra tells the story of three men whose lives are intimately connected through desire, pain and inheritance, across three different eras – 1932, 1937, and 2017.
Rich with Lorca's poetry and suffused with desire, grief and hope, it is an intimate love story and a sweeping exploration of memory, inheritance and queer history, honouring those whose lives and loves were too often forced into silence.
Directed by emerging stars Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi (jointly known as Los Javis), produced by Pedro Almodóvar and featuring supporting roles by Penélope Cruz, Julio Torres and Glenn Close, La Bola Negra dazzled audiences and critics at Cannes and TIFF and has emerged as one of the most serious contenders for this awards season. This demands to be seen on the big screen.
"...this decades-spanning love odyssey is as impressive as it is moving, grabbing at the visceral nature of Lorca’s genre-bending work to mould its staggeringly boisterous cinematic equivalent." - Little White Lies' review of La Bola Negra.
