Advance your knowledge of Mokuhanga (Japanese woodblock printing) in this three-day, in-depth masterclass. 

You'll use a combination of techniques across the three days, learning how to carve various types of wood, printing using both hand burnishing pad (baren) and press, and incorporating numerous processes to enrich your finished woodblock prints. You'll leave with a deep insight into this attractive, eco-friendly, water-based printing process from Japan.

This course is designed for those who have completed our Japanese Woodblock Printing class or have previous experience in block printing.

Need to know

  • What to bring

All essential materials will be provided. However, you are free to bring along source material, or simple ideas you may wish to use as a basis for your print design.

 

  • What to wear

Printmaking can get messy - aprons are provided but please wear clothes you don't mind getting splash of ink on. Please note that open-toed shoes and sandals are not allowed in the Print Studio.

 

  • Food & drinks

A sealed water flask or drinking vessel is permitted but other food and drinks are not allowed in the studio.

Campbell Sandilands

Campbell Sandilands is an artist who has been sharing his knowledge of Japanese woodblock printing and brush calligraphy in DCA since 1999. He was taught by Masters of these artforms in Japan and has a wealth of experience in teaching both 'Shodo' and 'Ukiyo-e'.
