2025 in review: DCA Print Studio

We take a look back some exciting printmaking projects from 2025

2025 has been a busy one in DCA Print Studio, full of lots of exciting printmaking projects.

Over the past 12 months we've hosted production residencies with exhibiting artists, welcomed two artists for DCA Print Studio x Jerwood Residencies, created three new DCA Editions, taught many Get Creative classes, held workshops for schools and community groups, and put on an exhibition of work by our Registered Users.

We've also worked with visiting artists on some very interesting projects, many of which took experimental approaches to printmaking. As the year draws to a close, we wanted to take a look back and share more about what we've been up to.

Whale song with Anya Gallaccio

Paisley born artist Anya Gallaccio was commissioned by the Government Art Collection to create a print for The Robson Orr TenTen Award 2025. This project works with prominent UK artists to create limited edition prints which enter the Government Art Collection and find homes in diplomatic buildings around the world.

We were delighted to welcome her into the studio, where her experimental approach resulted in the print eight hours of whale song, 2025. Creating this visualisation of whale song involved many different processes, from vibrations of the sounds being captured by powder moving on acrylic and then scanning the resulting patterns, to printing from laser engraved plywood sheets and then also engraving into the finished prints.

The end result is a layered and textured image, with each print in the edition being unique. The finished print was unveiled in London at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and Frieze Art Fair. The process of creating the print was captured a Making the Print film by Government Art Collection - watch it below.

A highlight for me this year was working with Anya Gallaccio. She was the first artist to create a DCA Edition in 2002, which was when I started working in the studio. So it feels like a full circle moment to get to work with her again and it was such an exciting project. We were able to really experiment with different processes and developed a new form of 'pyrogravure', which references using the burnt laser-etched surface of the wood as a pigment in the print.

Exploring deep time with Ilana Halperin

Artist Ilana Halperin has been working with us in the studio for nearly 20 years, bringing lots of exciting projects our way. This year we worked with her on a number of pieces for An Anatomy of Mars, an exhibition in Iceland curated by Claire Cousins and Catriona McAra which runs until 23 December 2025.

This work involved engraving drawings into alabaster and inking them with a mix of soil and ochre. We also assisted in printing We are All Extremophiles, an etching that was printed with hand made ink composed of a core sample of soil from the farm of Scottish geologist and "Father of Modern Geology" James Hutton.

And we've continued to put our laser cutter to work as we've been engraving on Scottish marble as part of Halperin's preparations for her upcoming exhibition at Fruitmarket, which runs from 28 February 2026. We can't wait to share more about this process in the new year.

Ilana Halperin has a really long-standing relationship with the Print Studio, spanning 20 years. She came here primarily as a sculptor and encouraged by the team to use a sculptural approach in the studio, printmaking became integral to her practice. It’s been nice to reconnect with her this year to create work for two exhibitions and a personal highlight for me. I’ve always loved her work and back when I was at art school, her approach to landscape really inspired me, so it’s been wonderful to work on these projects with her.

Collaborating with Matthew Arthur Williams and Cove Park

To mark their 25th anniversary, Cove Park commissioned artist, photographer and DJ Matthew Arthur Williams to create a limited edition print in our studio. We’ve worked with both Matthew and Cove Park in the past (Matthew’s solo exhibition, Soon Come, filled DCA galleries from December 2022 to March 2023), so this was a great opportunity to collaborate again.

The image for the print, titled 77°F, originates from 2022 when Williams was in Northumberland to photograph the artist and photographer Ingrid Pollard (another artist we worked with this year) for a feature in The Observer. We screen printed it onto Fabriano Rosaspina paper, and then each print was individually submerged in a bath of hibiscus tea. This dyed the paper w which changed as it dried, a process that we captured in the film below.  The print is available to buy from Cove Park here.

A highlight was working with Matthew Arthur Williams on a print for Cove Park's 25th anniversary. Each print got dyed individually in hibiscus brew, making them a purple colour. Delicious smell and gorgeous artwork!

Sculptural prints with Lauren Gault

This year we welcomed exhibiting artist Lauren Gault for a production residency, during which she made exciting new works for her exhibition bone stone voice alone

She brought her sculpture background to printmaking, creating a large, experimental wall piece, printed using stone ‘slurry’ (a biproduct of stone manufacturing processes) as well as an intricate set of Japanese Takuhon prints, whose ghostly 3d forms take the shape of fossils, bones and stones. You can see the results of this work in the galleries now - we're so happy with how they turned out.

We also worked with her on a new DCA Edition. GOODBYE (deinos sauros) features a collage of two historical works and used the same experimental technique as her wall piece in the gallery of printing with stone slurry.

New DCA Editions

As well as working with Lauren Gault on her limited edition print GOODBYE (deinos sauros), we also produced two DCA Editions linked to the exhibition Soft Impressions. Helen Cammock's screenprint, Solitude, is a re-imagining of the large scale mural that she created in DCA galleries and Ingrid Pollard's interactive print, Wee Drummer Man, draws on the the theme of repetition seen in her work for Soft Impressions. All are available to buy from DCA Shop, with every sale helping to support DCA and the work that we do.

Exhibiting work Made in DCA Print Studio

This year saw our biggest Made in DCA Print Studio Exhibition yet, as Registered Users filled Centrespace with prints created at DCA. The exhibition ran from Sat 20 September to Sun 5 October and featured over 100 framed prints by 47 local artists.

We spoke to some of the exhibiting artists before the show (see our film below) and received some lovely feedback from visitors:

Lovely exhibition, good to see local artists work.

What a beautiful assortment of styles, types of print and what they're about! Such a joy to witness.

Great array of work and great prices. Well done everyone.

What a beautiful, varied show! Wonderful to see printmaking and the requisite facilities are alive and well her in Dundee.

Thank you to everyone who visited the studio in 2025. From community groups, school pupils and class participants to Registered Users, exhibiting and visiting artists, it's been a real pleasure to welcome everyone.

We've also really enjoyed starting work with Andrew Gannon and Jo Longhurst for We Contain Multitudes, which comes to DCA Galleries in February - 2026 is already shaping up to be another print filled year and we can't wait to share more!
