Animating with DCA Young Filmmakers
A look back at our first Stop Motion Animation Week
In August, we welcomed eight young people aged between 15 and 18 for our first Stop Motion Animation Week.
Led by Jonathan Charles and Simone Bloomfield of D fie foe and DCA Learning Coordinator Andrew Low, our first group of DCA Young Filmmakers spent a week learning all about different styles of stop motion animation. They were guided through the processes of pre and post production, explored how to create narratives and found out about careers in filmmaking.
Working together, they collaborated on different techniques, communicated their ideas and adapted whenever they encountered challenges. Over the course of the week they created an amazing show reel of different animations. Watch it below and hear what they thought about their week of animation.

We asked the group what they learned from the week...
I've grown better at my team work and compromising when sharing ideas.
I learnt hand-drawn stop motion animation, how to plan and set up an animation and different types of lighting and camera shots.
How to pace framing to create a smooth transition.
I've learned to create a story as a group instead of on my own.
How to finish before a deadline!
I learnt to be less 'tidy' with animation and use more organic lines.
And when asked what they enjoyed most, they shared...
So much insight into what it is like to really produce a film and how to work with other people so that the final results are what we all want.
Being encouraged every step of the way no matter how challenging I thought it was.
Experimenting with all the different types of animation.
Planning and designing characters for the animation and then animating them!
I love how all of us had a similar goal and shared interests.
