Celebrating Tarkovsky's filmmaking legacy
Join us to celebrate legendary director Andrei Tarkovsky with a special film season showcasing all seven of his feature films.
Considered one of cinema's greatest auteurs, the Russian director's work is admired by other filmmaking greats including Ingmar Bergman ("Tarkovsky for me is the greatest...") and Akira Kurosawa ("I love all of Tarkovsky's films"), and has had a lasting influence on cinema.
Tarkovsky's films explore themes of spirituality, reality and time using signature long takes and striking compositions. The season's title comes form Sculpting in Time, the film theory book he published in 1985 which lays out his thinking on filmmaking and his thoughts on his own cinematic output.
The season begins with his accomplished debut Ivan's Childhood and ends with his visionary final film The Sacrifice, which we are screening in 4K to celebrate it's 40th anniversary. We've also got a 60th anniversary screening of Andrei Rublev, a 4K restoration of Nostalghia, and his most autobiographical film Mirror, plus his two acclaimed sci-fi adaptations Stalker and Solaris.
