Scott Myles’ work explores and manipulates the social nuances of language and established aesthetic codes. He has a longstanding interest in typography and signage and the range of contextual meanings and associations with which they are imbued.

Full Stop (The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman) makes reference to the 18th century novel of the same title by Lawrence Sterne. An experimental novel known for its typographic play, its pages include displaced punctuation marks, breaks and blank sections which exist alongside the farcical biography of the main narrative. Sterne’s publication is often referred to as the first ‘anti novel’ or pre-cursor to non-linear narrative. Originating from a photograph taken through a microscope, Myles’ etching depicts the final full stop that closes the last sentence of this book.

The open blackness of the full stop implies both presence and absence, revealing a multitude of flaws and variations within its exploded form. At first seemingly abstract, this highly selfreferential work analyses in painstaking detail the intrinsic qualities of printed text, which, despite its enlarged state, fails to reveal a definitive meaning.

Scott Myles was born in Dundee in 1975 and graduated from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design in 1997. He currently lives and works in Glasgow. Recent solo exhibitions include The Modern Institute, Glasgow, Galleria Sonia Rosso, Turin and Kunsthalle Zurich, Zurich. He participated in the 2006 Tate Triennial, and his work was included in The Associates for DCA’s 10 year anniversary in 2009. His work is held in the Tate Collection.
