The Near Shore

A Scottish and Irish Cine-Concert

Fresh from its premiere at Glasgow Film Festival, we are excited to bring you the only other UK screening of this programme of silent film work presenting perspectives on Scotland and Ireland, with lively musical accompaniment by Irish musicians.

Including works by filmmakers from both sides of the water; the fascinating footage features holidays, honeymoons, and early science fiction. The traditional folk trio of Patrick Carayannis, Rodney Lancashire and Seamus Hernon, and renowned avant-garde free-improvisational pianist Paul Smyth will alternately score the programme, making for a very special night in DCA cinema.

The rarely seen silent films include The Farm Below the Mountain (1958), a film made by Scottish amateur Ernest Tiernan in Co Leitrim; Ireland by Air, starring Scottish aviatrix Winnie Drinkwater; the films of Desmond Leslie of the aristocratic Leslie Clan of Scotland; and Butlins holiday camp films by John Tomkins.

This collaboration between The Irish Film Institute and Dundee Contemporary Arts is supported by Culture Ireland as part of GB18: Promoting Irish Arts in Britain.
