Haxan: Witchcraft Through the Ages (15)

27 September 2011

Cinema

Ruth Ewan has selected the jazz scored, William Burroughs version of this cult film. Writer-director Christensen takes a historical study of witchcraft as his starting point for a fascinating film that’s part science, part horror and part social commentary. Christensen himself makes appearances as the Devil, as Jesus and as himself. The film is inspired by his research into the Malleus Maleficarum – a 15th century treatise on witchcraft and a handbook for witch-hunters and Inquisitors.

‘Christensen is at once painter, historian, social critic, and a highly self-conscious filmmaker. His world comes alive as few attempts to recreate the past on film have.’ Chris Fujiwara.
