Selection of silk scarves in different colours, decorated using the Shibori dyeing technique

Craft Sunday: Shibori Silk Scarves with Syrah Jay

Duration: 5h
Dates: Sun 26 Apr 2026 12:00 - 17:00
Location: Centrespace

Local maker Syrah Jay is back to share the secrets of Shibori and this time we’ll be working with silk.

Shibori is a Japanese manual resist dyeing technique which produces patterns on fabric. Dating back to the 8th century, the most customary colour used was indigo that created an intensely rich shade of blue. Modern day Shibori uses a variety of colours and in this workshop you will get to experiment with a complementary palette as well as the traditional indigo.

Join Syrah and learn how to make your own Shibori silk scarf by folding, twisting and stitching your fabric to create a unique piece of wearable art.

You’ll also have the opportunity to make some textile jewellery using indigo dyed cord, beads and simple knotting techniques.

As always, we’ll have plenty of tea, coffee and biscuits to help fuel your making during this fun afternoon.
