Paintings

15 May - 27 June 1999

This was the first opportunity in Scotland to view an exhibition of Ian Davenport's disarmingly beautiful, large scale paintings. Their sensuous surfaces and pure colours are achieved through pouring pools of household paint across each picture, a process that involves split second timing to succeed.

In this series, the narrow gap between first and second pour becomes an elegant arc, reflecting an almost sculptural control over paint as a material subject to gravity.

Responding to the space and light of DCA's galleries, this exhibition included new paintings to be shown for the first time and related earlier works.
