After Love

Aleem Khan

The following screening will be captioned for d/Deaf and Hard of Hearing customers: Sat 19 June, 16:15

TV and film veteran Joanna Scanlan (The Thick of It, Pin Cushion, How to Build a Girl) gives a quietly devastating performance as a woman exploring her late husband’s secrets in After Love, the arresting feature debut from short filmmaker Aleem Khan (Three Brothers).

“…an accomplished, elegantly realised and insightful drama”

Grappling with the unexpected death of her husband (Nasser Memarzia), Mary Hussain, who took the name Fatima when she converted to his Muslim faith, is tidying his things in their Dover home when she stumbles upon a secret. Armed with just a bag and his cell phone, she sets off across the Channel to Calais to uncover the truth.

Sensitively directed by Khan, After Love is an accomplished, elegantly realised and insightful drama about the possibilities of connection across physical and cultural barriers. A remarkable debut, with a delicacy and tenderness that is testament to the quality of its writing and performances, it is brilliantly led by Scanlan. Usually seen in (memorable) character roles and often hailed for her comedic work, she is revelatory here as a woman struggling to cope with the uncertainties of her past and future after a complicated loss, ably supported by Nathalie Richard and newcomer Talid Ariss.

When you're booking your cinema ticket you'll notice the cinema has been divided into 'bubbles' in order to maintain social distancing. You won't be able to book part of a bubble, but you can book more than one. If you can’t find a combination of seats that suits your group please get in touch and we’ll try to help, although capacity is very limited in all screenings.

Each bubble may only be occupied by a single household: if you're visiting with people from another household they should book a separate bubble.

If you need to book one of our wheelchair seats please contact our box office team on 01382 432 444, or email dca@dca.org.uk.
