Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn

Radu Jude

This outlandishly-titled Romanian film was shot during the pandemic and finds writer-director Rada Jude (I Do Not Care If We Go Down in History as Barbarians) in a provocative, reactive and sharply intelligent mode.

“explicit, funny, genuinely shocking and thoroughly thought-provoking”

The film is effectively split into three parts with the main plot following the trials and tribulations of Emi (Katia Pascariu), a schoolteacher, who finds her career and reputation under threat after a personal sex tape is uploaded to the internet. With the parents of her class demanding her dismissal, Emi prepares to face her critics head-on in a comedic parent-teacher showdown.

Whilst this forms the narrative backbone for the film, Jude makes full use of the potential of the cinematic form, as the second act veers wildly into the realm of the video essay. Delivered in montage form, this light-hearted but damning section covers subjects including Romanian politics, culture, and history with a satirical touch. It also lays the groundwork for the debate set to take place in part three: the farcical, climactic parent-teacher conference.

Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn is a film as inventive as any you’ll see this year; explicit, funny, genuinely shocking and thoroughly thought-provoking, this singular film will force the viewer to confront their own ideas about the social contracts we all hold each other to and the power of the moving image.
