Bring a Baby: Dolittle

Stephen Gaghan

Fresh for the new decade, building on the previous work of both Eddie Murphy and Rex Harrison, we now have Robert Downey Jr. in a vivid reimagining of Hugh Lofting’s classic stories of the man who can talk to animals. Co-written and directed by Oscar-winning Stephen Gaghan (Traffic, Syriana), this promises to be an absolute visual feast for all the family.

"...promises to be an absolute visual feast for all the family."

After losing his wife seven years earlier, the eccentric Dr. John Dolittle, famed doctor and veterinarian of Queen Victoria’s England, hermits himself away behind the high walls of Dolittle Manor with only his menagerie of exotic animals for company. But when the young queen (played by Jessie Buckley, Wild Rose) falls gravely ill, a reluctant Dolittle is forced to set sail on an epic adventure to a mythical island in search of a cure, regaining his wit and courage as he crosses old adversaries and discovers wondrous creatures.

The film blends together some high quality CGI animal performances with top of the range voice actors, including an anxious gorilla (Rami Malek), an enthusiastic but bird-brained duck (Octavia Spencer), a bickering duo of a cynical ostrich (Kumail Nanjiani) and an upbeat polar bear (John Cena) together with a headstrong parrot (Emma Thompson), who serves as Dolittle’s most trusted advisor and confidante. The film also stars Antonio Banderas, Michael Sheen and Jim Broadbent along with additional voices provided by Marion Cotillard, Frances de la Tour, Ralph Fiennes, Selena Gomez and Tom Holland.
