The Good Boss

Fernando León de Aranoa

Fernando León de Aranoa previously worked with Javier Bardem on the Escobar biopic Loving Pablo and the gentle drama Mondays in the Sun. With The Good Boss, they change gear dramatically, skillfully balancing humour with a merciless critique of greed. Bardem excels as a corporate boss, who will tell you he’s your best friend just as he’s stabbing you in the back in this ruthlessly, funny, corporate satire.

"How far will he go to get his prestigious award?"

‘Hard Work, Balance, Loyalty’ are the values proudly inscribed on the walls of the successful industrial scales company Basculas Blanco. Boss and community bigwig Blanco (Bardem) promotes himself as a father figure to his staff-as-family. However, just as his factory is shortlisted for a local business award, Blanco quickly turns abusive parent while having to firefight potential catastrophes – a sacked employee’s public protest, his right-hand man’s marital breakdown, his own misjudged fling with an intern. Just when he needs his factory to look immaculate, the whole world seems to conspire against him. How far will he go to get his prestigious award?

Winner of six Goyas (Spanish Oscars), The Good Boss puts the wonderful Bardem at centre stage, embodying the toxic, entitled Blanco, whose mentality continues to make the modern corporate world so fertile a country for rich old men.
