Wood Engraving (January)

Four-week course

Course dates: Mon from 20 January (four-week course).

Can't make these dates? We have another Wood Engraving course running in March.

Join Beth Robertson for this form of printmaking that uses engraving tools to create finely detailed designs. The images are created by cutting into the surface of the end grain of box, lemon or cherry wood.

What will be covered?
We'll prepare and paint end-grain woodblocks ready for engraving, discuss various types of wood and equipment used for wood engraving and look through collection of wood engravings by various artists.

We'll then get used to the tools by making engraving marks on starting blocks, print our first blocks and learn how to transfer image to the end grain woodblock. Finally we'll finish the design, engrave it and print in black and white.

What should I bring?
You are welcome to bring a few images that inspire you but you don't need to bring anything as we'll provide all the necessary supplies.

What should I wear?
Comfortable clothing for working in. Aprons are provided but some inks are not washable. Please note no sandals or open-toed footwear in the Print Studio.

What should I expect?
You'll take away a small collection of black and white prints from the day which will consist of the end grain starting blocks in black and white, as well as the wood blocks themselves which can be worked on and re-printed in the future. Please note that we are using end grain wood blocks therefore the prints are petite. This allows the printmaker to create small delicate pieces.

Please ensure you have read our Print Studio Terms and Conditions before booking on to any of our Print Studio courses or workshops.
