Boys State + Satellite Q&A

Jesse Moss and Amanda McBaine

This film will be preceded by a live satellite introduction and followed by a Q&A with directors Jesse Moss and Amanda McBaine.

The sensational winner of the U.S. Documentary Grand Jury Prize at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, Boys State is a wildly entertaining and continually revealing immersion into a week-long annual program in which a thousand Texas high school seniors gather for an elaborate mock exercise: building their own state government.

“…manages to plant seeds of hope for a country heading into a game-changing election period”

High-minded ideals collide with low-down dirty tricks as four boys of diverse backgrounds and political views navigate the challenges of organising political parties, shaping consensus, and campaigning for the highest office at Texas Boys State—governor. Filmmakers Jesse Moss and Amanda McBaine closely track the escalating tensions that arise within a particularly riveting gubernatorial race, training their cameras on unforgettable teenagers like Ben, a Reagan-loving arch-conservative who brims with confidence despite personal setbacks, and Steven, a progressive-minded child of Mexican immigrants who stands by his convictions amidst the sea of red.

Documenting impeachment threats, dramatic debates, underdog victories, and even nefarious internet memes, Boys State charts the dramatic twists and turns of these intersecting stories to reveal profound truths about our political choices and civic obligations and to remind us, ultimately, that democracy is not a spectator sport. A complex portrait of contemporary American masculinity, as well as a microcosm of often dispiriting national political divisions, this documentary nevertheless still manages to plant seeds of hope for a country heading into a game-changing election period.
